More than a dozen ancillary buildings, mainly clustered around the feet of the massive parents made up the Hunterston scene, providing contrast and giving scale to the two reactor buildings which with their large areas of glass had an elusive quality of lightness.

Exterior finishes were neutral and subdued - grey concrete, grey brick, panel fillings between reinforced concrete frames, local sandstone facings and panels of Westmoreland slate - with occasional touches of bright color as relief.

The over all impression is one of unobtrusiveness, of assimilation of a great complex into the rugged background
